Pastor Bob Klein

I was born in Baltimore, Maryland and grew up in one of its suburbs called Glen Burnie.  My Mom grew up at 1st Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh, PA and sent me to their camp in Ligonier, PA, when I was ten – and there I first met Jesus. I went to Hope College in Holland, Michigan, as a sophomore I organized and started an intercollegiate club lacrosse team, where I played and was head coach from ’74-‘76. Hope still has a lacrosse team, and will become full varsity status in 2013! In 1978 I started a publication covering lacrosse, called “In the Crease” and published it from ’78-‘83. I began to serve in ministry as a volunteer with Young Life in 1978, then went on YL staff from ’82-88, in Maryland, Massachusetts and Ohio.

While on Young Life staff I began my theological studies with Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA, and I completed my Masters of Divinity there in 1994. I became an ordained pastor in 1995.

In 1993, I married my best friend Karen, the person who shares my love for Jesus and helping others find out about His love, and she also encourages my passion for sports – she is my closest partner in ministry and life.  God has blessed us with three children (all in their teens) whom we love and enjoy immensely.

God brought us to San Diego in 2000 and enabled us to start the Harbor UTC church on Easter 2001, and then to start Harbor Mira Mesa on Easter 2005.  When we started Mira Mesa our firm commitment was to serve the community, and one way to do that was to have a youth ministry.  In the spring of 2007, I helped start and coach boys’ lacrosse for Mira Mesa High School.  Through this we are adding value to the local high school and it helped our youth pastor start the youth ministry.  So here I am, still enjoying those two major themes of my life: love for Jesus and sports!

I also love movies and thinking about how God shows the good news of His love for us in virtually every movie. My favorite movie of all time is Ben Hur.  I also enjoy classical music concerts, live jazz clubs, playing guitar and singing my own songs – go to http://thebbobbykleinsteinband.bandcamp.com to hear some of my songs!  I follow the Orioles, Padres, Chargers, the Terps, and Aztecs.  I still try to go backpacking once in a while, I run/walk about five miles several times a week, and play tennis weekly.
